If you have early-stage breast cancer (Stage 0, 1 or 2) with a tumor size smaller than 3 cm (the size of a walnut), you could be eligible for accelerated 5-Day Targeted Radiation Therapy. Talk with your doctors about all the risks and benefits of your treatment. They will carefully evaluate your cancer to determine if you are a candidate for this plan.
Here are some things you can personally do to help make your decision:
RECORD what your doctors tell you about your treatment options. Planning your treatment can be a very emotional time, and so much information is being thrown in your direction. Keeping a detailed notebook can help you look back at your notes when making critical decisions.
BRING a friend or family member with you to key appointments. Two people listening to what your doctors are saying are better than one. That person can help you sort through all of this new information and help you make treatment decisions that work for you.
TALK to breast cancer survivors about their experiences with treatment. Their insight and expertise will help you decide on the right treatment path.
The safety and effectiveness of the MammoSite Radiation Therapy System (RTS), MammoSite ML Radiation Therapy System and the Contura Applicator as a replacement for whole breast irradiation in the treatment of breast cancer has not been established.
